Full Version: Here's A Question For You All

Mine are spread out over 3 rooms, my bedroom, dining room (which is not a dining room right now lol) and the actual chin room.

Has anyone heard of a chin being kept in the bathroom. I've heard someone that does and asked if the chin is removed when the shower or bath is being used and was told no, but I would have assumed the steam and heat would have been a bit much - unless the bathroom is massive and is has an air expeller thingee. But her wee fella has free range of the bathroom, which I guess makes sense as she made it all safe - but it was the heat and steam I was thinking of.

Ours is on the edge of the kitchen/central room of our apt. for the colder months, and will move to the second bedroom/office for the summer (easier to air condition).
The bathroom would terrify me personally, in case one day I forgot to put the lid down on the toilet!! I've read stories of chins drowning (shudder) but presumably your friend is VERY careful about it...
I too would think the heat/ humidity would be a lot, but perhaps the bathroom is massive and has great ventilation?

What I'd have had concerns about is the chin jumping in the bath or shower, anywhere there is water really. I don't know the person, she contacted me asking if I knew anyone who would trial a chinchilla to be a friend with her own one and I asked where her's is kept and that's when she said - he's free-range from 7pm til 6am then in his cage - which stays in the bathroom. I didn't want to ask too much about it as when I said what I'd personally be concerned about it - I got a "he's fine" reply.

Trixie lives in the living room with us. I have a separate room for her to have as a playroom. But I always supervise her. I would have a problem in the bathroom as well. The water is an issue, but if there is an undersink cabinet, I would be concerned if there were any cleaning chemicals under there that the chin could get into.

I wouldn't fancy the bathroom, and am not keen on unsupervised runs specially in the bathroom.

Mine shared my bedsit with me until last year, now I have a house and they have the (adapted) garage but they got custody of the pc ensuring I spend my evenings in their garage 2wink.gif

Ours are in the living room with us. I know some people say that you shouldn't keep them in the main living area because of the noise and TV etc, but ours have never seemed to have a problem with it. Also we are all out of the house all day, so it's quiet while they are sleeping, and we are around to play with them when they are awake.

I wouldn't be happy about the bathroom either, although I do free range my mice in the bath! I always supervise out of cage playtime too - too many opportunities for mischief rolleyes.gif

Ours are currently in their own room, but they will soon be moving into the living room with us... all 8 of them! wacko.gif
We only have 2 bedrooms, and the one the chins live in is needed as a bedroom again so we are kicking them out. laugh2.gif

Our chins have their own bedroom! They live in the spare bedroom and although, it's chinproof, I still wouldn't leave them unsupervised.

When we were trying to pair Henry and Treacle, we conducted supervised introductions in the bathroom because it was a 'neutral zone', but I wouldn't have them living there. What about all the damp and steam? Wouldn't the moisture cling to their fur and cause fungal infections and respiratory problems? It's all very well having chins using the bathroom as a play area, but as living quarters...........it just seems a bit irresponsible to me.......

Before we moved house, Adam and I lived in an open-plan flat. We only had Wilbur, Kipling and Henry then, and the boys had the run of the place: they thought it was great. Whenever I opened the fridge, the three of them would run around my legs with excitement because they knew that was where the blueberries were kept!

Before we got Hen and Kip, it was just Adam, Wilbur and I, and Wilby used to cause havoc all by himself. One evening, I was at work, so Adam let Wilbur out. He'd just had a shower and had forgotten to close the bathroom door. All of a sudden, Adam could hear crashes, bangs and whollops, and rushed into the bathroom only to discover Wilbur jumping around in the shower cubicle, splashing through the dregs of water, and gleefully pushing over the shampoo bottles: he'd never been in the bathroom before, and he was having a great time! Thankfully, he'd only got his feet wet, so Adam had to sit on the sofa and dry Wilbur's feet until I came home from work. It took almost a week for Wilbur to forgive Adam for spoiling his fun! rolleyes.gif

The rescues live in 3 purpose built adjoining sheds, the garage (which is converted into the hospital and boys room), the office and the realy sick ones are on our dining table in the family room.

When we run out of space for sick chins, they go into the front room and hall way - have been known to take a chin or two to bed - saves getting up during the night.

As for the chin in the bathroom - it would be way too damp for him

Hi my chins are in my kitchen its a big kitchen so they are on my table and in the summer i may move to a spare room to keep cooler xx

I have 2 cages in the living room, my Molly and her parter is in one, her son and his girlies in the other. All the rest of mine, and my piggies live in one of the bedrooms, along with most of my daughter Sam's furries. She has a boy group in her bedroom away from the pairs and female groups.

I keep Asha in the Spare room which is effectively hers now! I wouldn't leave her to run around on her own, she would create too much mischief and probably end up hurting herself. rolleyes.gif

we turned the garage into a room , blocked off the front door , put flooring down and oil radiators for the winter and strip lighting . in the summer it stay very cool in there so thats good for them .

Ya know Sarah, I was wondering the same thing laugh2.gif

Sorry, off topic LOL My lot live in two cages in my bedroom and with central air/heat they stay in a constant comfortable environment. I do not think the bathroom is an acceptable area for a chin to live IMO and I think she is very irresponsible if she lets her chin roam free in there for the entire night and I wouldn't suggest anyone to her for a possible future cagemate for her current furrie. sad.gif

I'm so glad you all confirmed my thoughts of a chin in the bathroom - I didn't even think about a cupboard where things could be that the chin could get into, never mind if there is a gap and he could get out sad.gif I'll try and word a good email to her about it again, although I think it will go down like a ton of bricks - but at least I tried. Totally get everyone's thoughts about supervised play-times too and I couldn't agree more.

I did have to giggle about Wilbur having a blast and having it all ruined by Adam. I saw your photos of your new area in the rescue section here Jane and think it's neat smile.gif Well done smile.gif

I wouldn't mind chins in the lounge, we can't do it here as it's very sunny and the rooms are cooler then there is the issue of the log burner thing that will get used over winter so keeping the chins out of that area. Mine do have TV's to watch though - they think it's great and love sitting watching 'family' shows lol
