our chinchilla bacardi just had her babies. as far as we can see she has had 2 so far, but one has died.

we dont really know what to do.
do we remove the dead one and the male chinchilla, or do we leave them both in there for a while until they get used to it?

please help!

Congratulations on the new kit, but sorry for the one that died hug4.gif

You need to take Dad out and remove the dead kit

I hope Mum is in a small cage where the kit can' climb and fall - also ensure the kit can't escape through the wire mesh.

Line the bottom of the cage with paper so the kit doesn't trap his legs

Look out for the afterbirth - Mum will probably eat it - don't worry, its good for her

Give Mum a couple of raisins, this will help to give her some energy

If Mum is still straining, please don't let her go for more than 4 hours - if she does continue, then you will have to get her to the vets

Good luck hug4.gif

How are Mum and Baby now?
Dani champ
yea they are much better now thank you, pcheers3.gif

they have all settled down, we couldnt remove the dad because we didnt have anywhere to put him, but he kinda of removed himself, as soon as he felt she was ok, he disappeared up to the top level of the cage and hasnt come down apart from to get food and water. fair enough really i suppose rolleyes.gif

but they seem ok, we are going to take mother and baby to the vets in about a week or so, just to get them checked and stuff.

Glad to hear all is well biggrin.gif

So sorry about your kit that didn't make it, we've lost two kits in the past and each time was just as hard as the last. sad.gif

Sorry to be a pain, but you really MUST take the male out smile.gif its better for all of you, and especially mum!! Plus it lowers the risk of baby getting jumped on, it has been known for the kit/s to get in the way of a chinchilla male "trying it on" with a female, it resulted in the kit sadly dying sad.gif . So please try and get a cage and take him out asap!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Im sorry to her about the kit who died but blower.gif on your new arrival!

I agree with Rich and Chelle there- you cant check them 24/7 and so the male might have impreganted the female again already. Take him out asap for everyones sake.

Mum and baby need rest and dad will be OK til he will be able to get back with mum in a couple of months time.

You also said the Dad moved to the top level- perhaps you could block the top level off so he could stay up there and baby couldn't get up there? Baby needs to be in a single level cage for sure so as to not be injured sad.gif
Dani champ
yea we did that last night, the baby tried to get up the stairs, got about 2 rung thingys up and then cried because it couldnt get down laugh2.gif but mum came along and got it down. so we have blocked it off for the moment.

also, we were wondering, how long do we leave it till we can take the kit out and check whether it is a he or she? the vet said that we should leave it for 24 hours and then check but we are not too sure. we dont really want it to get hurt when we put it back in.

and we phoned the pet shop and they said that we shouldnt separate mum and dad because aparently last time, when they got back together they fought all the time, but i dont know. im so confused!

anyway, ramble over, thanks for the advice people, really helpful!
Dani champ
oh and also, my sister just came in and told me that the baby keeps crying for food but the mother isnt letting it feed unsure.gif and now she is worried. and now so am i.

Afraid the pet shop is giving out incorrect information - Dad has to be taken out to prevent breedback - the female needs to rest.

Kits usually lose a little weight in the first day, but they should then start to gain.

I would suggest you weigh the kit at the same time every day - that way you will see if Mum is feeding him. The kit should have a full tummy and his tail should be starting to curl - if it is flat it indicates lack of food.

Have a look at http://www.azure-chinchillas.co.uk/pages/h...chinchillas.php which has some very good information on hand feeding.

Please ensure the kit cannot climb too high as he is liable to hurt himself when he falls.

As already said in a previous post, please get another cage for Dad to enable Mum to rest. You will need the extra cage for when weaning the kit anyway.

Where abouts are you located?
Dani champ
its ok!
she is feeding him again.
and its a little boy so we called him Jack Daniels.
he is 3 days old now and he has a little afro and he is soooooooo cute lovestruck.gif

he is feeding well and is running around quite nicely, stumbling a bit but its normal i suppose.

we got some cotten gloves today so we can pick up the baby and see if he's ok, and thats how we found out he is a he.

yea, er.....
thats about it,

oh yea, i live in bexhill, near hastings or brighton if you know where that is :S

its in east sussex.

Glad to hear everything is going well, and that the male has been separated!! biggrin.gif How's he doing? Being mardy, our Saurus was when we took him away from his Silke. Days and Days of not speaking to us rolleyes.gif Big mardy!!

And how is mum and kit? Glad to hear he's feeding, he'll gain his strength so quickly now!! smile.gif Look so cute with that little afro lovestruck.gif reminds me of Elvis!! (he didn't make it past 3 days - but he had an afro, hence his name).

Good luck with your new arrival, and enjoy the innocence, while it lasts!!

Glad to hear that the baby is feeding well.

Any chance of any pics? biggrin.gif We all love to see babies
Dani champ
ahh good point, i will get some when i get my camera back tomorrow.

how do add pics to this?! Dunno.gif
-chinquest_*
You can either upload them to a free host such as photobucket and copy and paste their url into the IMG tags that show when you are posting or hit the browse button and upload your image (needs to be below 49k)

if that's not clear chinmom usually manages to translate my instructions into an understandable format :wink3:

Well, I like photobucket cuz ya don't have to crop, crop, crop till you get it down to the 49k limit here. Photobucket is free so once you have your piccies in your puter just upload them to photobucket, once you do that just go to the last tag on the pic that says IMG, highlight it, right click, copy then toggle over to your post here and right click, paste and "VOILA", instant piccie for all to see laugh2.gif
