Given a choice (money etc no object)
Would you feed Beapher care + or a pellet?

Beaphar!
Seems more popular, less wastage, less crumbling at the bottom of the bag and most importantly Becca says it tastes the yummiest!

Strangely enough my two don't seem too fussed at it!
I have Yogi on Charnwoods, Scooby came to me on Harrison's. Harrison's is hard to source for me, Charnwoods obviously easy but high in wastage. BUT... Scooby won't touch Charnwoods. So I was wondering do I keep on trying the Beapher + (as it's readily available and long dated) or do I keep plugging the Charnwoods with Scooby. Or do I say s#d the pair of you have this (Beapher!)!!
Have headache now!

We've never tried the Beapher but have read that lots of chin owners do prefer it. Our lot are on Charnwoods and they seem to like it although we get a lot of waste dust in the bottom of bag and bowls. Where can you get Beapher from just out of interest as I have thought about swapping them due to the waste we get on the Charnwoods so may try it !!

Quite a few online stores sell it but you have to pay postage, or try your local pet store, they may be able to order it in, or John Hopewell does free postaage on four bags

My Boys went nuts for the Care + and preferred it over the Science Selective by a mile. Lovely and Crunchy too.

I used to feed all mine on Beaphar now I just feed the chin & Degus group on the Beaphar (+ g.pig Excel) oh and Snowy because he prefers it. The rest get Science Selective which is a bit easier on my pocket and I can buy locally. I've just started buying Care + from John Hopewell because of the free postage on 4 bags

I am going to have to try this beapher + if only as a treat
feeding it to all 32 on a daily basis may stretch my wallet a tad too much

I use Beapher + and Science Selective for some of the rescues with teeth problems - some like one, some like the other - just have to remember who

Strangely my two just aren't having the Beapher!!
We actually had a bit of a break through with Scooby last night, he was on 15g of Harrison's and 15g of Beapher, but I'd put some Charnwoods in there on the off chance. This morning all the Harrison's were gone, no Beapher gone but 10g of Charnwoods had gone! So maybe I was being too namby pamby and he will eat it if his favourite is becoming less and less!
So maybe we'll be sticking to Charnwoods after all!

Mine are fed Charnwoods and as a treat, get Beapher Care + and Science Selective, though a couple of very small chins and their cagemates are on it permanently
Judging by the response....munching and crunching when the BC+ is offered, I think they would ALL give it the paws up over the pellets
I just WISH they made HUGE bags of BC+ but I suppose it wouldn't be cost effective for the manufacturers....just US who would love to buy it cheaper!

I'd stick with pellets and give Beaphar as a treat - having said that, I have some oldies and a few chins with tooth problems who get Beaphar as a staple and pellets as an addition. I have found that some chins get bored of even something scrummy like Beaphar

or some will pick out their favourite coloured bits - a certain Gregg leaves the beige round ones.

Also, as Debbie has said, it's just not cost effective for a larger number of chins - unfortunately.

Am a newbie here - but my chins love Beaphar Care +! In order to make it more cost effective and just because they seem to like the variety I mix Beaphar with Charnwoods which seems to go down well. They like both and I'm happy too so all's well. The Beaphar also makes a great treat for my degus too!

My fussy little fluffs turn their noses up at the Beaphar, they much prefer the Charnwoods and Science Select.

hi guys,Just been looking up all these different food types and am really confused.I have Bags on P@H chinchilla pellets (see link)
http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is...roduct-is-11485I then got Shadow who is apparently on P@H pellets but they are different to Bags' pellets in that they are thinner and longer and slightly different colour. The breeder told me that she buys a massive bag froom P@H and when they haven't had them in she brought the small bag like mine. She says the ingredients are exactly the same but Shadow doesn't like the ones Bags has.I've been looking at different foods in a view to change them both as from what i can gather (I might be wrong) there are healthier foods out there. Can anyone advise on the best ones to try so that i can get some in before Bags runs out of the stuff i have so i can see if they take to it?I realise everyone will think differently, but if you can advise what i should be looking out for on ingredients i can make an informed decision!!!ThanksP.S. Is this the Beapher stuff people talk about?
http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is...product-is-9650Also should i use more than one hay? I only use timothy hay at the moment?

This is Beaphar Care +
http://www.johnhopewell.co.uk/default.asp?...p;productId=207
It is quite expensive compared to other feeds, but is worth every penny IMO. In comparison to a lot of pellets this one is extremely palatable and it is rare that a Chin will turn it's nose up at it. If you are unsure you can buy sample bags (250g) direct from Beaphar, or at least used to be able to! I feed Beaphar Care + as a main feed, but I know some of our members use it as a treat or a mix with their main feed.
I've never used the P@H pellets, so can't really comment on what they are like but I think Julia on here uses them or used to use them so maybe she'll be able to help?
There are quite a few different pelleted foods available, all have their pros and cons, I guess initially it's a question of which ones you can get hold of easily and then if the chins like them and do well on them, you need to make sure that they are readily available to you. I had a nightmare just after I switched my guys onto Beaphar because the local shop stopped stocking it!! Apparently it was a promotional thing and they had decided against getting it in again - luckily John Hopewell came to my rescue and I buy in bulk from him now
With regard to Hay, if you haven't already discovered the Hay Experts, it might be worth checking them out as they do a handy little taster pack with a sample of 6 different hays - The Hay Experts.
The most important thing with hay is that the Chins actually eat it, as it's such a vital part of their diet. Some get bored quickly, some are picky and some are just down right mutinous, which is why a number of us feed a selection of hays. If your chinnies are happy with their Timothy then you may as well stick with it
If you feel they don't eat enough hay then it might be worth shopping around for some different types to see which ones they like and don't like.
I have a staple hay which they get a good handful of each day (from the Dust Free Hay Company - fabulous stuff!) and on top of this I have a selection of what we call 'posh' hay that gets offered in the evening - mostly from The Hay Experts, Galens Garden and Burns.

Hi,
You are right in thinking you have two types of pellets. P@H do not sell their own pellets in any bag other than the 1kg bags you have been buying. They sell sacks of Henry Bell pellets ; which are a good - but totally different food. The ingredients aren't the same at all.
I now use Beapher Care + personally for my guys as they go mad for it, it's nice hard and crunchy, it's got a long use by date too. I buy through my local shop but at least i know i can get it easily from John Hopewell with Free postage. mine didn't take to Science Selective which is another good 'premium' food.
I would highly recommend the Care + for people with not many chins (at £7.99 for 1.5kgs it's the dearest food i've ever found) but well worth it,
Remember any changes in diet should be done very slowly, over a matter of weeks, increasing the ratio of new food to old food.
Bags
Nov 20 2008, 08:31 AM
Hi guys thanks for the advice. When i topped up food tuesday night i only put 10grams of his old food in with 10 grams of the food i use with Bags so i could see exactly what he was eating. When i weighed it yesterday 14grams was gone, all of his food and 4 grams of the new stuff. I looked in cage and can't find the food so i am guessing he ate it. I put more food in last night and only put 7grams of his food in to see if he continues to eat the other food. I know from the first two days of just his food he was eating around 10 - 12grams per day so if this decreases then i will change food. If he continues to eat this much and still puts on weight then i will slowly change him over. If he stops eating or starts losing weight i will switch Bags and him to something else. All so confusing!!! I can't get Beapher Care + locally as nowhere seems to have it and i would struggle to store 4 bags in one time so it would work out even more expensive buying it less than four bags so unless i have to i would prefer to find something else. But Shadow appears to be a very very fussy eater unlike Bags!!! The other thing is that i spoke to breeder last night and she said that there should be no problem with the P@H stuff with Shadow as she had to use it for two weeks when she couldn't get hold of the usual stuff!!!

I have tried the beaphar + and alot of mine weren't fussed to be honest
some cages left it all some ate certain colours and some ate all of the pieces so I wont be buying any more
I have all the chins but 1 on harrisons as it is the easiest pellet for me to get hold of
Nigel just refuses to eat any so he has science selective every day with a few harrisons mixed in for Nancy who he shares a cage with
then everyone else but Sooty gets harrisons every day with a few science selective chunks added every other day or so
Sooty loves his harrisons but refuses to eat science selective so he has a few bits (and I mean just a few before anyone shoots me down) of charlie chin as thats what he ate before he came to mine and he then thinks he has a real feast his little eyes light up bless him
mine also have baled hay from the farm and reddigrass everyday

Bit of a boob I'm afraid that's a mix isn't it? You can always use it for treats

John Hopewell and Trish both sell Beaphar Care +

No I think that is Beaphar Xtra Vital, not Beaphar Care Plus.

I have 6 of my girls on Charnwoods but the two with teeth problems get Beaphar Care + as it's very crunchy so encourages them to chew.

Yeahhhh i just read this and have my Beaphar on order i usually have to travel over 20miles to get mine, and sometimes they dont have it. at huntingdon nobody stocks it not pets at home or huntingdon garden leisure... so i end up going to an aviary in leverington or scampers in soham which is 30 or so miles.... so far nowhere else nearby stocks it........ so John hopewell is a god send as i didnt know he did it! my older chins love it. i dont know about smokey as not had it and bounced from local pet shops pellets along with timothy hay.. so i am hoping seeing as smokey is a fussy so and so that he will like beaphar just as much as the other chins did when introduced... hehehe looking forward to seeing what colour smokey goes for first! i have feeling it will be pink. as he wont eat the new mineral block i bought, as i bought white one as the pink block makes all of his white underbelly and paws even ears goes bright pink!!!

so i dont know what i will do at weekend but his face at the white plain rectangle block is just soooo sad, that i took it out!!! x

Well since I posted this the chins got to a point where they were just picking out the Beaphar and were leaving the Charnwood pellets - so I gave up and now I only feed the Beaphar Care +.....

Ours use Beaphar Care + too- they get it with their Duggins 2x a week- as a special treat. Altho our Mac keeps fitting when the bag comes out. Thats the only time he does it- even if he gets fed first- we dont even have the chance to open the bag and put some of these pellets in his cage...

chins, eh?
