The wheel isn't generally the cause of the noise. It is usually the vibration of it against the wire of the cage.
You can put a wooden block under the arm of the wheel which minimises the bounce so therefor making it a little quieter.
Other than that just buy some earmuffs lol.
My chins are kept in an outdoor unit and quite a few have wheels. When you approach the door it sounds like thunder when they are all using them lol

Was it the noise of the wheel going round or the chin bouncing on the wheel making the cage rattle that annoyed you the most ?
If it's rotational noise that's the problem then it could be the bearing has worn out - is it a new wheel or an older one ? If you've had it a while has the noise got progressively worse over time ? Replacing the bearing is posibly a little tricky but not impossible. You could try sending an e-mail to enquiries@flyingsaucerwheel.co.uk and see how much a new bearing would cost and what is involved in fitting it.
If it's cage rattling that's the problem all I can thing of is to brace the wheel maybe and remove any rattly items from the cage.
If the cage is in the bedroom then I can well understand why you couldn't sleep - even with a quiet wheel the speed the chins run and how hard they pound on them would stop me from sleeping for sure !
Good luck,
John

I had the same problem Rachel and I'm afraid had to confiscate the wheel when my neighbour complained about the noise

That is exactly the reason why my spoilt rotten babies do not have a wheel! I was warned that none of them are quiet.

Our 2 are in the lounge and can be noisy on the wheel at night.
We live in a 3 storey house, so when we go to bed hear nothing and the neighbours have never complained - LOL

Aside from all the other good advice already given, I highly recommend some industrial strength Earplugs! Works brilliantly for me and I'm the worlds lightest sleeper

O my god! it was that loud??? i know mine woke me up (my parent are both deaf so it cant wake them up...)
The chinchillas were the reason why my sister switched rooms with my parents!

same here for noise, i have to confiscate their wheel at night, my boyfriend has taken to ear plugs so he can sleep at night through their noise, doesnt really bother me. can sleep through most of it.
