> Health Guidelines

Please Read
Hopefully we all have one thing in common - the welfare of our chins and our desire to share stories of our pets with each other. An important part of this is sharing our health concerns and experiences.

Our first port of call if worried should always be the vets. We should try to remember the difference between our own experiences (which in themselves can vary in different situations) and information we have picked up along the way. Where possible would you please make clear where any details you mention came from, have you been through this or have you read it somewhere? If from a website/message board please provide a link where possible (or link and quote) , so that other members may make a better judgement for themselves as to the validity of the details.

We ask that you do not try to impose your views on others, just let's be here to share, comfort and help where we can.

Hi everyone!

Scampi and Mya are doing really well, however Scampi for some time has been making what appears to be a retching motion when he eats. (He eats normally and has been to the vets since it started and they didn't notice anything suspicious...)

However this morning I noticed he was doing it without eating and I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this behaviour, asI'm worried in case it's the start of something more menacing!

Thanks everyone

Hmm not normal behaviour with my lot anyway. My first thought was maybe he had something stuck in his mouth/throat but hopefully the vet would have found that. Hopefully someone will be along soon with a bit more of an idea.

Doesnt sound normal to me either. None of mine do anything like that. In your shoes I would be going back to the vet. Just as a thought, is the vet you saw experienced with chins?

Agree, not normal behavior. My Star does it but only if she tries to eat a pellet too fast, she is missing a cheek tooth on the side she normally chews on so sometimes she will try to swallow a piece that's too big and it gets stuck then passes when it softens but I keep an eye on her. Did the vet check to make sure something wasn't caught in his throat, maybe something he chewed on is stuck in there?

Blimey, I've never seen a chin do that unsure.gif I definately think another trip to the vets is in order and as Trish said ensure you're seeing a chin-competent vet - it's ok to ask! smile.gif

Hiya, ive never seen that with mine but i would go to the vets again and ask them to check for anything in the mouth including furballs...im sure they can get them, or threads if they have access to stringy things?.... something like that which might be thin and irritating.

Its hard to look in a chins mouth without knocking them out, but it sounds like something is amiss so it may be worth a proper investigation shrug.gif

I hope you get to the bottom of it crossfingers.gif

Hi Sarah, I agree it's definitely not normal. It might be worth going to the vet to be on the safe side, I hope everything is ok! hug4.gif

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies, just been to the vet (who is fantastic by the way, in the 12 years I've had chinnies he's by far the most knowledgable and treats the owner as well as the patient!) Scampi had a bard on one of his teeth, which he thought was causing the problem (it was huge for a chin, I now feel a terrible owner for letting it happen.)

So we're back home and Scamp's already begging for treats, so hopefully that will solve the problem, but I'll keep you all posted... Thanks again!!

I would put a little note in your diary to take him back to the vets in about 3-4 monthsto check the problem doesnt start to creep back. It can be a one off occurance, but sometimes they do recur. Hopefully that will be the end of it now. If only they could tell us what the problem was rolleyes.gif
